The European regional and cohesion policy

Study trip to Brussels (June 24th - 27th, 2008)

Gruppenbild

The European Union's regional policy aims at reducing structural disparities between EU regions, fostering a balanced development throughout the EU and promoting really equal opportunities for all. Based on the concepts of solidarity and economic and social cohesion, this aim shall be achieved by means of a variety of financing operations, principally through the Structural Funds and the Cohesion Fund. For the period of 2007 to 2013, the European Union's regional policy is the EU's second largest budget item, with an allocation of € 348 billion. Given the economic and social disparities in and between the Member States and regions of the European Union (EU), the objective of economic and social cohesion is a crucial aim of the EU at least since its Southern enlargement in 1981 and 1986. Recently, the European structural and cohesion policies have been closely integrated into the European Strategy for Growth and Jobs, the so-called Lisbon strategy, in order to improve the integration of the European priorities and the national and regional development programmes, and to ensure greater national and regional ownership of cohesion policy.
