Lecture Series 2009/10: European employment development in times of crisis
Future prospects of European employment development are strongly influenced by the current financial and economic crisis. All EU-countries witness common phenomena as reduced working hours, mass dismissals and growing unemployment. Overall, a very negative outlook on employment development trends challenges Europe. Hence, national and European policy approaches, administrative and regulatory procedures are on trial: It is uncertain in which ways the apparent challenges can be dealt with. How can present trends in employment be interpreted? Which current policy approaches for the European labour markets exist? What lessons can be learned from the past? What are the prospects of new reform paths chosen? The current situation in Europe points to the need for complex considerations on the functioning of labour markets. It throws up questions on the development of labour regulations, the evolution of industrial relations and labour markets’ interdependencies with the financial, economic and social security systems. Therefore, we, the Jean Monnet Centre for Europeanisation and Transnational Regulations Oldenburg (CETRO), propose to discuss these upcoming issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. In the framework of an international lecture series, scholars from the field of sociology, economics and law will address current debates, approaches and reflections on the European employment development in these times of crisis.
